Cedar Privacy Fence with Retaining Wall Base, Gilham Neighborhood

This project, located in the Gilham neighborhood of Northeast Eugene, combines a cedar privacy fence with a pressure-treated retaining wall base to solve a common backyard challenge, a sloped lot.

The fence itself was built using #1 grade cedar fence boards and cedar rails, set on 4x4x10′ pressure-treated posts placed in concrete every 8 feet for a stable, long-lasting structure.

Along the base of the fence, a pressure-treated retaining wall was added to account for the slope of the yard.

This brings the total fence height to about 7 feet and serves a practical purpose beyond privacy, it holds the client’s garden bed and soil in place, preventing it from spilling over into the neighboring yard.

The result is a fence that handles a tricky grade change while still delivering the clean, natural look cedar is known for. It’s a good example of how the right combination of materials and structural planning can solve both aesthetic and functional problems in the same project.
